PSHE

At South Wootton Infant School, we use the Jigsaw PSHE programme to help children develop the skills they need to grow into confident, caring and resilient individuals. Our curriculum supports children’s emotional wellbeing, teaches them how to build positive relationships and helps them understand how to stay healthy and safe.

Intent

We aim to nurture the whole child by developing their self‑confidence, emotional literacy, respect for others and understanding of the world around them. PSHE at our school lays the foundations for good mental health, positive behaviour and safe choices.

Implementation

Jigsaw is taught weekly from Early Years to Year 2. All year groups follow the same themed unit (Puzzle) at the same time, creating a consistent whole‑school approach. Lessons include mindfulness, discussions, stories and practical activities. The curriculum covers:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Learning is adapted to meet individual needs and reinforced through assemblies, restorative practice and wider school life.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 1, our children are able to talk about their feelings, build positive friendships, celebrate differences, stay safe and make healthy choices. They leave us as confident, kind and respectful young learners, ready for the next stage of school.

If you were to walk into a PHSE lesson at SWIS you would see;

  • children participating in a mindful activity to focus the mind and regulate emotions
  • confident children engaged in meaningful discussions
  • a safe and inclusive environment where every child can contribute confidently
  • interactive and age‑appropriate lessons, using stories, discussion, role‑play and practical activities that build children’s understanding of feelings, relationships, health and safety.
