PE

Intent

At South Wootton Infant School, we believe that every child is entitled to a high-quality PE education and we aim to deliver purposeful teaching and learning that inspires all children to excel in physical education and help them to live active, healthy lives. Our PE curriculum challenges and promotes self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It teaches children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities. We value an inclusive approach to PE, which endeavours to encourage not only physical development, but also mental wellbeing.

Implementation

  •     Our progressive, skills based PE curriculum ensures the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
  •     The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year. Teachers are able to adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes. PE progression grids are used to ensure coverage across the year groups.
  •     Each class has access to two hours of high quality physical activity every week. In reception this is made up of the red mile track and bikes and trikes in addition to a 1 hour PE lesson.
  •     Children are given the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular after school sporting activities/clubs.  They are also given opportunities to take part in competitive sport, through both intra- and inter- school sport.
  •     In Year 1 the children complete stage 1 of the Bikeability Programme. Any children that are still unable to ride a pedal bike without stabilisers by the end of Year 1 complete the programme again in Year 2.
  •     In Year 2 children swim once a week for 10 weeks during the Spring Term.
  •     Through the use of Sports Premium money specialist PE coaches are used across the year, offering fun and innovative sessions for pupils and also offering staff the chance to upskill their own practice.
  •     All year groups use Tapestry to share learning experiences with the parents where appropriate.

Impact

  •     At South Wootton Infant School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the opportunities to develop skills and to achieve their personal best.
  •     We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sporting skills through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport.
  •     There is a clear progression of skills through the year groups and these will be reflected in the planned lessons and the recorded outcomes.
  •     We encourage our pupils to be physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise.
