Music

Intent

At South Wootton Infant School, every child is entitled to a high-quality music education. Our school aims to inspire all children to develop a life-long love of music. Through a high quality, fun and engaging music curriculum, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture creative, confident children who will strive to reach their full musical potential. We listen to our children’s wants and needs and provide them with a range of musical experiences that welcomes self-expression and imagination.

Implementation

  •    Music is taught as part of the half termly topics. The curriculum planning in Music is carried out in three phases (long-term, medium-term, and short term).
  •    Teachers use the Get Set 4 Music for planning and delivering the Music curriculum.
  •    Music is taught as a weekly whole class session and singing assemblies incorporate the whole school.
  •    Skills are then practised in Continuous Provision in Reception and Year 1. We encourage the musical experiences and development of our children in reception as an integral part of their work. We relate the musical development of the children to the objectives set out in the Early Learning Goals.

Impact

  •    Children will be able to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians;
  •    They will learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, can explore and play a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and can progress to the next level of musical excellence;
  •    Children will understand and explore how music is created, produced, and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations

If you were to walk into a Music lesson at SWIS you would see:

  1.     Children who enjoy their music sessions.
  1.     Children who are keen to learn and who are use a range of instruments throughout the year.
  1.     Children who are confident to talk about the different music they have experienced.

How equality, diversity and citizenship is embedded in Music teaching and learning

At SWIS we recognise the importance Music plays in the curriculum and beyond. We understand that Music provides opportunity for personal expression and growth and the integral part it can play in developing the whole child. This vibrant subject transcends different cultures, abilities and generations and facilitates the bringing together of communities. We value the subject a as unique way of communicating which can both inspire and motivate children with a love of music which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Music lessons at SWIS encourage children to be creative, imaginative and confident learners. Our objectives in the teaching of Music align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils participate in music lessons as much as possible.

We are passionate about educating both our children and families to develop a greater understanding of how to benefit from the joys of music in aiding healthy minds and positive well-being. We do this by having strong links with our local music hub and collaborating in projects within our community.

Teaching and Learning

Our Music lessons are planned using the Get Set 4 Music platform, which aligns with our core values, our whole child approach to Music and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. Get Set 4 Music is planned so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the Infant school and into the Junior school. Get Set 4 Music is used throughout the federation so that progression is built through from Reception to Year 6.

Assessment

Our teachers assess the children’s work in Music through direct observation of children at work, questioning children or listening to their conversations.

Pupil Voice

  •     In music we sing.
  •     We play loud and quiet.
  •     The instruments are really good fun.
